Why does Pocket 4 split at 16GB?
DJI says the Osmo Pocket 4 series splits video when the file reaches roughly 16GB. The camera keeps recording, but starts a new file. This reduces the risk and inconvenience of handling extremely large single files. The important point is that a single continuous take can therefore be represented by several camera files.
DJI official split-logic reference ↗What is the actual editing problem?
You can place the split files back-to-back in an NLE, but that still leaves you managing several source clips. For multicamera work, long-form events, archive delivery, or anything where the recording itself should behave like one camera file, the split can become needless friction. A manual timeline arrangement is also different from creating one new source file that preserves the original encoded media.
What does “merge without re-encoding” mean?
Re-encoding means decoding the picture and sound and compressing them again. That can take time and can create a new generation of compressed media. RTM. is designed to preserve the original HEVC video and AAC audio payload instead. It creates a new continuous output without a generational video/audio re-encode, while leaving the camera originals untouched.
How RTM. handles Pocket 4 / 4P split recordings
- Choose the folder that contains the original DJI files.
- RTM. analyzes the files and identifies continuous recording chains instead of blindly joining everything in the folder.
- You can inspect the detected clips, order, expected duration, and output size before merging.
- Full creates the merged file and runs verification. If the safety checks do not make sense, RTM. stops instead of guessing.
Try it on your own footage before you buy
RTM. is free to download and analyze. You can select your own Pocket 4 / 4P folder and confirm that the recording reaches “Ready to Merge” before purchasing Full. Full is a one-time $79 license and unlocks Merge + Verify.
A practical note for long-form shooters
Keep the original DJI files until you have verified your archive and edit. RTM. never needs to rewrite those originals. For production work, that read-only approach matters: the merge should be a new deliverable, not a destructive operation on the camera media.
FAQ
Does Osmo Pocket 4 really split recordings at 16GB?
Yes. DJI documents that the Pocket 4 series automatically splits video at about 16GB.
Does the split mean the camera stopped recording?
Not necessarily. A long continuous take can continue into the next file. The split is a file-management boundary.
Can I just put the files next to each other in Premiere Pro?
Yes, for many edits you can. RTM. is for cases where you want the recording restored as one verified source file instead of managing multiple split clips.
Does RTM. modify my original DJI files?
No. The source files remain untouched; RTM. creates a separate merged output.
Does RTM. join unrelated recordings?
No. RTM. is designed to identify continuous recording chains and avoid blindly joining separate takes.
